Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for the specialized, technical, investigative, and educational application and enforcement of municipal, provincial, and federal fire prevention by-laws and codes.
Directly in line with the Town of Innisfil’s Strategic Plan 2030, the Fire Prevention Officer will be responsible for conducting comprehensive fire prevention inspections of all classes of building and occupancies for compliance to the Town of lnnisfil's by-laws, the Ontario Fire Code, and Ontario Building Code, as well as:
- Identifying violations and facilitating or ordering corrective action, conducting fire prevention public awareness sessions, and conducting fire and emergency scene investigations
- Performing physical and visual examinations of buildings, identifying conditions and hazards, and advising owner of corrective measures
- Preparing inspection reports and maintaining records so that the premises meets or exceeds the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code, the Ontario Building Code and other relevant legislation
- Evaluating and monitoring fire safety plans by reviewing, providing comments and approving submitted fire plans, verifying the implementation of approved plans and documenting acceptance of plans and their implementation
- Conducting and/or assisting with emergency scene investigations to determine origin and cause; compiling necessary information, gathering evidence, and completing required documentation
- Reviewing and commenting on development and building permit application and plans; evaluating development proposals such as site plans, subdivision plans, zoning and official plans; examining plans, drawings, and specifications for buildings to be erected, modified, or demolished
We are seeking a candidate with the following accreditations:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Fire Protection Technology, Building Construction, Engineering, Architecture, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner level II certification. NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator level I, NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator, and BCIN certifications are preferred, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a public sector fire prevention role with demonstrated practical experience in the fields of fire protection, prevention and strong plans review skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Fire and Building Codes, related legislation, standards, municipal bylaws and regulations related to all aspects of fire protection, fire prevention, and fire safety education.
- CPR/First Aid Certification is an asset.
- Ability to attend after hour meetings and events which may include evenings and weekends. Must be able to participate in a rotational on-call schedule.
- A current valid Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing.
Closing date is March 14, 2025.
The salary for this position is $137,296 per annum (Based on a 42-hour week) and the successful candidate will be compensated accordingly.
