Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Communications Officer, the successful candidate will answer 911 and other calls for emergency assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive fire alarms, operate telephone and computerized dispatch equipment.
  • Maintain radio contact with fire service vehicles, both at emergencies and other departmental activities.
  • Perform system tests, record activities and perform related communications functions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Shift work is required involving evening/night shift (5pm - 7am), day shift (7am - 5pm), weekends and holidays.

Skills and Qualifications

  • You must be able to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment. 
  • In addition to demonstrating clear English communication and comprehension skills, your qualifications include:
    • A high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Graduation from an accredited post-secondary Emergency Services Dispatch program is a definite asset.
    • Emergency communications experience and/or related post secondary education are definite assets.
    • Proven keyboarding skills of a minimum 40 words per minute, with a high degree of accuracy.
    • Ability to multi-task.
    • Completion of APCO (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials) "Public Safety Telecommunicator 1, 7th Ed., Canada" course or completion of NFPA 1061, are definite assets.
  • Level 3 – Vulnerable Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

*Please note that we are hiring for a permanent position, however this position is subject to layoff as per collective agreement.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $76,318 - $109,026 
Hours of Work: 42 
Work Location: Peel Regional Police, 22 Division 
Department/Division/Section: CMO/City Manager's Office , CMO/Fire Division , Training and Technology 
Non-Union/Union: Fire
