City of Mississauga Announces New Fire Chief
MISSISSAUGA, July 4, 2014 – The City of Mississauga has appointed Tim Beckett as the City’s new fire chief effective July 21, 2014. Reporting to Commissioner of Community Services Paul Mitcham, Chief Beckett will be a member of the Community Services leadership team responsible for managing the business functions of the Fire & Emergency Services Division.
Fire and Emergency Services provides the City of Mississauga, its residents, business and industry fire suppression, medical, rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention and inspection services, public education and life safety programs.
“I am pleased that Tim has chosen to join Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner of Community Services. “He will be sure to continue the tradition of excellence in public safety established by former Chief John McDougall.”
Chief Beckett is the fire chief for the City of Kitchener Fire Department. As a member of the City’s Corporate Management Team and Community Services Senior Management Team he managed the overall strategic, financial and day-to-day operations of the department. He was responsible for the department’s $30 million annual operating budget and led 231 staff serving at seven stations. His 28 years of fire service experience include fire chief for the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and various positions at the City of Vaughn Fire Rescue Service.
As the Ontario Fire Marshal Regional Co-ordinator for the Region of Waterloo, he was responsible for managing the Region of Waterloo Mutual Aid Plan and co-ordinating mutual aid services for seven regional departments covering over 1369 square kilometers (529 square miles). Chief Becket served two years as the president of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for leadership excellence for his work with the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Ryerson University and a Fire Protection Technology diploma from the Ontario Fire College.
