Passing of Retired Chief Tom Tennant, Service Information

Passed away peacefully at Deep River and District Hospital in his 88th year on Wednesday February 18, 2015. Beloved husband of Margaret Elaine Cuthbert. Loving father of the late Marilyn Elaine Tennant; Marjorie Kellow (Colin) Chalk River; Keith Tennant  (Christine) Niagara Falls and Douglas Charles (Barbara Jean Tilson) Chalk River. Cherished grandfather of Sheri Sundelin (Duane), Jamie Kellow, Jason Kellow (Jessica, Nicole Fray (TJ), Daryl Tennant, Hannah Tennant, Seamus Tennant and Mariah Tennant. Proud great-grandfather of Julia Kellow, Delanie Kellow, Kristen Tennant, Gavin and Hayden Fray, Ethan and Logan Kellow. 

Dearly loved brother of Marion Becker (the late Al) of Seaforth, Boyd Tennant (the late Gail) of Chalk River, Mary Reckzin and her husband Earl of Renfrew, Beverley Stringer and her husband Dave of Whitby and predeceased by a brother John Tennant. 

Tom was born in Chalk River and he was first employed with the Canadian Pacific Railway.  Later Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) Chalk, the Chalk River Fire Department and the Office of the Fire Marshal. 

Tom was the recipient of the Ontario Fire Service Long Service Medal and the Canadian Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal. Though he retired from the fire service in 1990 Tom carried on his love of public service when he was elected and served four years as Reeve (Mayor) of Chalk River in the 1990s and represented Chalk River at Renfrew County Council. 

In addition to his love of family and community, Tom was a considerable man of spiritual and religious faith. He was a member of and worked diligently for the broader community through St. Andrews United Church all of his life. Tom was active in St. Andrews choir, served on many church committees and was a Trustee until his passing. 

Tom was an active member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch Chalk River for several decades. He was also a member of and served in various officer capacities with LOL Chalk River. Tom travelled the world and was on a continual mission of  lifelong learning. 

Visitation Friday February 20 2:00-4:00 pm & 7:00-9:00 pm at Valley Funeral Home,  Deep River.  Funeral service, St. Andrews United Church 40 Joseph Street, Chalk River ON, Saturday, February 21 at 2:00. 

In memory of Tom donations may be made to Canadian Blood Services, or St. Andrews United Church, Chalk River.
