A woman was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation after a multiple-alarm fire on Wellington Street South overnight.
Several people and dogs were rescued by firefighters.
One of the dogs did not survive. The woman was in stable condition and was expected to be released.
The fire broke out at 86 Wellington St. S., a two and a half-storey residence with multiple apartments, shortly before midnight Saturday.
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, but it caused damage estimated at around $295,000.
"Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy smoke and fire conditions on the first floor and smoke conditions visible at the second floor," said Deputy Fire Chief John Verbeek.
The residents on the first floor had already fled the building, but there were reports of other tenants on the second and third floors.
Firefighters rescued several residents on those floors, he said. Other crews attacked the fire and the call was upgraded to multiple alarm, bringing more resources to the site.
Hamilton police held the scene for much of Saturday for an investigator from the Office of the Fire Marshal. But the OFM found the fire wasn't suspicious.
