Two people were hospitalized following a house fire on Sunday, May 18, at 152 John Street in Sturgeon Falls.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., the West Nipissing Fire and Emergency Service responded to a structure fire. Fire Chief Frank Loeffen told BayToday, “Upon arrival, the members encountered heavy smoke and flames with confirmation two residents were still inside.”

Firefighters conducted a successful search of the building and rescued both residents, the Chief added. Once removed from the building, EMS was there to care for them.

“Our thoughts are with the individuals and family during this difficult time,” Chief Loeffen said.

Both residents were conscious when the firefighters pulled them out. However, both suffered from smoke inhalation and suffered some burns, according to the initial report. The Chief said that, as of his most recent update on Monday, May 19, both individuals remained hospitalized.

Once rescued, the firefighters extinguished the fire and were able to contain it in the building of origin. The Ontario Fire Marshall attended the scene on Monday, May 19, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Chief estimated the loss to be $250,000.
