Mississauga fire chief with tips to stay safe.

Lithium-ion batteries power the lives of millions of people each day and in today’s fast-paced world, families spend hours on cellphones, tablets and laptops. Across Mississauga, many residents have also invested in e-scooters, e-bikes and electric or hybrid vehicles in an effort to live more sustainably. While battery-powered items are tested for safety, there are still risks you need to know about.

Many people may not be aware that lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small amount of space. When that energy is released uncontrollably, a reaction occurs inside the battery that can generate heat, which produces flammable and toxic gases. These gases are hazardous to firefighters and bystanders and can have lasting medical consequences.

Follow these tips and stay safe:

• It may feel good to have full battery life, but avoid charging devices overnight and unplug once batteries reach 100 per cent.

• Purchase replacement batteries and chargers that meet Canadian Electrical Safety Certification from CSA, cUL or cETL.

• Never charge a device under your pillow, on a bed or couch and leave unattended.

• Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire.

• Be careful of batteries that have odour, change colours or shapes, overheat, leak or make noises. If this happens, stop using the battery immediately and discontinue use. If you notice a strange odour or smoke coming from a battery leave the area immediately and call 911.
