COBOURG — A fire early Sunday morning that destroyed two CN Rail buildings in Cobourg is being called suspicious and investigated by the Ontario Fire Marshal.
Cobourg police officers were called to the scene Sunday at about 1:45 a.m. at the CN yards, located north of the Cobourg Via Rail station.
The yards, located at 649 George St., received extensive damage to two structures on the property as a result of the fire, police said.
The cause of the fire is suspicious at this time, police determined.
Cobourg Police are working alongside CN Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office on the investigation.
Cobourg fire department Captain Scott MacDonald said firefighters could see the fire as they were coming down Division Street, and that two buildings have been completely destroyed.
"The north building is a workshop and the south building belongs to the CN Rail signalling division," he said at the scene, adding that there were electronics inside the latter building. "We had the fire under control by 6:30 a.m. and have been checking for hot spots this morning."
There was no immediate word on an estimate of the damage from the blaze.
Tom Rate took several photos of the fire after going to investigate a sound that he heard while behind the Pizza Pizza building where he works.
"I heard a pop and saw an orange glow," he said, adding that he then went to investigate the cause.
