Stoney Creek house fire may have started in fireplace

A fire broke out at a home in Stoney Creek Friday morning and it’s believed to have ignited from discarded fireplace material.

Hamilton fire department responded to reports of a house fire at 22 Teak St. just after 9 a.m.

Crews arrived at the private residence to find heavy smoke and fire visible from the upper portions of the structure.

According to Assistant Deputy Chief Steve Welton, firefighters immediately began protecting adjacent homes from fire spread and entered the home to “further contain and extinguish the fire that had already extended into the upper roof and attic areas.”

All occupants were able to self-evacuate from before help arrived. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from “discarded fireplace materials.”

Firefighters remained on scene into Friday afternoon monitor to address hot spots.

Initial damage estimates are believed to be between $200,000 to $300,000.
