Smoke alarms saved Scugog couple’s lives: Fire chief

A man has a broken ankle, but Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney says it could’ve been worse after a house fire in Scugog.

Fire crews were called to a home on Shirley Road, south of Blackstock around 11 p.m. Wednesday. They found a home fully engulfed in flames.

A couple woke up to the sound of smoke alarms and a man crawled out a second floor window and jumped from a roof to escape, breaking his ankle. He and a woman, both in their early 60s, suffered smoke inhalation, but are expected to be released from hospital Thursday.

“Working smoke alarms enabled this couple to escape with their lives,” said Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney.

The house and its contents are a total loss, estimated at $575,000.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
