Hamilton Police Services’ arson unit is investigating a fire in the city’s east end Tuesday evening, which caused around $300,000 in damages.

Officers say a fire happened just after 6 p.m., in the upper level of a townhome in the area of Roxborough Avenue, east of Parkdale Ave. North.

Firefighters arrived to see visible smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the townhome.

Police say the fire was attended to and extinguished, and that the arson unit will be following up on the fire Wednesday.

A neighbour living across the street from the home told CHCH News they saw flames coming out of the window, but it had looked contained.

Police say that the family and their dog were outside of the home when the firefighters arrived.

One person was brought to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries reported from the responders at the scene.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified.
