With outdoor rinks opening up, think about ice safety if you venture out onto open bodies of water

With local outdoor skating rinks slowly beginning to open up including parts of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, more and more people are thinking about activities on the ice of our rivers and lakes.

Perth Fire Chief Trevor Choffe  says experience is an important factor on knowing when it’s safe to head out.

Choffe reminds anyone who does venture out on to the ice, whether it be for skating, ice fishing, or even snowmobiling, to be prepared.

The message is clear. If you’re not sure it’s safe, stay off the ice.
