A home under construction in Newcastle was completely destroyed in an early morning fire on Thursday.

Clarington firefighters were called to 219 Flood Ave. around 1:15 a.m. on May 9 for a structure fire in a new subdivision, said Randy Cowan, the fire service’s deputy chief.

The fire was “well involved” and flames were coming through the roof when firefighters arrived, said the deputy chief.

The home was not yet completed and was unoccupied at the time of the fire, he added.

No injuries were reported.

The house was a “total loss” and damage is estimated at more than $1 million, said Cowan.

Clarington firefighters “did an amazing job” keeping the fire to just one home and protecting others, he added.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been contacted, said the deputy chief.
