Middle-unit townhome garage fire contained in Greenboro

CityNews

Crews were out in the bitter cold this morning to stop the spread of a garage fire in the Greenboro area of the city.

Emergency calls were sent around 3:14 a.m., according to Ottawa Fire Services (OFS). Callers reported smoke and flames coming from a middle-unit townhome in the 300 block of Macoun Circle. Four minutes later firefighters arrived and found the garage fully engulfed in flames and spreading to two vehicles.

The situation was difficult for crews as a gas meter caught fire outside of the home, which created a hazard for those on scene.

A fast attack was initiated and one of the people living in the house told crews that everyone had left safely — including pets. Firefighters noted that a working smoke alarm was activated on the first floor.

Officials began searching the smoke-filled home and did not find anyone. They also checked both townhomes on each side of the unit to ensure the blaze had not spread.

The fire was under control about 30 minutes later and crews reported no spread to any other houses. Smoke was ventilated out of the structure with fans as a fire investigator was dispatched to the area.

A truck will remain on scene to monitor any flare-ups.
