Kawartha Lakes – Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service is joining communities across Ontario in observance of Carbon Monoxide Week, which runs from November 1 to November 7. This annual event aims to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and promote safety measures to protect families and individuals.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be produced by household appliances and heating systems. CO exposure can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, collapse, loss of consciousness, and death.
By law, in Ontario, CO alarms are required to be installed outside all sleeping areas of homes with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.
Fire Chief Terry Jones emphasized the importance of carbon monoxide safety stating, "During Carbon Monoxide Week, we urge residents to take proactive measures to protect their families. Simple steps, such as installing and testing CO alarms and ensuring proper ventilation, can make a significant difference in preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. Our goal is to raise awareness and save lives."
To ensure the safety of our community members, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service is sharing essential CO safety tips:
- Testing: Test CO alarms each month and change the batteries at least once a year using Day Light Saving Time changes as a reminder.
- Proper Ventilation: Ensure all fuel-burning appliances, such as furnaces, stoves, and fireplaces, are properly vented to the outside. Regularly check vents for blockages, which can lead to CO buildup.
- Annual Inspections: Schedule annual inspections for heating systems, water heaters, and other appliances that use gas or oil. A professional technician can identify and fix potential issues.
- Avoid Using Generators Indoors: Never use generators, charcoal grills, camp stoves, or other fuel-burning devices inside your home, garage, or enclosed spaces. CO can build up quickly in these areas.
- Seek Immediate Help if Alarms Sound: If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, evacuate your home immediately and call 911. Do not re-enter the premises until emergency responders have cleared the area.
Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service is committed to promoting CO safety and encourages residents to share these life-saving tips with their friends and family. For more information on carbon monoxide safety, please visit the Fire Safety and Prevention page on our website.
