A fire in an abandoned east-end Hamilton home Tuesday is being investigated as arson.

It happened around 10:45 a.m. in a two-storey home located at 43 Ottawa St. North between Main Street East and Dunsmure Road.

Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke billowing from the second floor. Once inside, crews were faced with substantial flames, smoke and heat.

A spokesperson for the Hamilton Fire Department says the blaze spread into the roof eaves before it was put out on the first floor. Firefighters on the second floor were also able to extinguish the fire in the attic and eaves.

No one was in the home at the time of the fire.

“Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, the Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and Hamilton police are investigating,” said the fire department spokesperson.

No firefighters were injured.

They say the estimated cost of damages is approximately $200,000.
