Fire crews spent most of their Saturday attending to a fire that destroyed a vacant barn in the city’s north end.
Deputy fire chief Brad Churchill said in an email there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters at a barn fire at 1130 Maple Grove Rd. Saturday morning.
The call came in just before 7 a.m. and Churchill said crews arrived to find the vacant barn fully involved. Crews spent 10 hours extinguishing hot spots and working with an excavator to get an all clear on potential victims.
None were located but Churchill said homeless people have been known to stay there in the past.
“Police had no reports of anyone unaccounted for in the community,” he said.
No animals or machinery were in the barn either.
“Because this fire consumed everything and was a total loss, the cause is undetermined but not suspicious,” he wrote.
Damage is estimated between $300,000 and $400,000.
Churchill said the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted during this process but there was no reason for them to attend or investigate further.
