A numbered company and person connected to a multi-residential building in Port Colborne have been fined nearly $10,000 for failing to maintain a smoke alarm and damaged fire separations, among other charges.

In a news release, Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services said charges stemmed from a complaint at 68 Fraser St. in April.

When firefighters checked the residence they noted multiple life-safety issues including damaged fire separations, a non-operational fire alarm system and sprinkler system, a non-operational fire extinguisher and disabled smoke alarms.

"As fire chief, I want to remind all residents who reside in multi-residential properties the importance of working smoke alarms, fire alarm systems and maintaining all safety devices within your building," said Tom Cartwright.

Last week in Provincial Offences Court, the person having care and control of the property pleaded guilty to two charges: damaged fire separations and fire system not being maintained in operating condition.

Fines totalled $5,000 and were payable by Vishal Chityal. Pleading guilty and fined $4,000 for failing to maintain a smoke alarm in a residential unit was numbered company 1825081 Ontario Inc.

Mayor Bill Steele said the fire service will continue to inspect and enforce the laws concerning fire safety.

"I want to commend our fire department for their diligence to fire safety and property standards in Port Colborne, specifically in keeping our tenant residents safe at home," he said.
