SEAN CHASE/DAILY OBSERVERLaurentian Valley Mayor Jack Wilson (centre) presents outgoing township fire chief John Primeau with a retirement gift on behalf of the municipality. Departing his post at the end of last year, Primeau has been succeeded by Tim Sutcliffe (fifth from left).

During a regular meeting of council, the outgoing chief was presented with a retirement gift and commemorative plaque to acknowledge his 37 years with the former Stafford Township, Tri-Township and Laurentian Valley departments.

“Through the 37 years there's been lots of changes,” Primeau told the council and a public gallery packed with his fellow firefighters. “Throughout the history of it, there has been a great acquaintence with council and staff.”

The departing fire chief stepped down at the end of last year to be suceeded by deputy chief Tim Sutcliffe. Mark Kaden took over as deputy. He was appointed to the position in November, 2008 replacing the retiring Joe Habraken. Enlisting as a firefighter in 1977 with Stafford Township, Primeau, who had served as deputy chief for 20 years prior to that, said residents are in good hands with the current company of firefighters.

“There's a younger generation with the department and it is progressing quite well,”

Council then gave Primeau a heartfelt standing ovation. Sutcliffe joined council in congratulating his predecessor on the culmination of a successful career.

“I want to wish John all the best,” said Sutcliffe. “I want to thank him for bringing me along and helping me to bring me to the position I am at now.”

Mayor Jack Wilson thanked not only Primeau but the volunteer firefighters and first responders who make a difference in their mandate to protect persons and property.

“There are times when you put your neck on the line and we really appreciate what you do for the municipality,” said Wilson.
