The cause of a fire in Guelph that killed two women nearly two months ago remains a mystery.

The fire at a townhouse complex on Edinburgh Road happened in the early morning hours of March 11.

The Ontario Fire Marshal later confirmed there were no working smoke alarms in the home, and added it had taken items from the home as part of an off-site investigation into the fire.

Efforts to contact the OFM’s office for an update have been unsuccessful.

Guelph deputy fire chief Steven Goode said they are still awaiting a report from the fire marshall's office.

Jeanette Niebler-Blei and her daughter Rachel Niebler were later identified as the two women who died in the blaze.

Mark Blei and his stepdaughter Kirsten Niebler were able to get out of the house.
