An investigation is underway into an overnight fire at Kakabeka Falls that sent one person to hospital.

The individual's identity and condition have not been disclosed yet by official sources.

The fire broke out late Monday night at the Petro-Canada gas station on Highway 11/17.

The gas pumps and fuel tanks remained intact after the fire but there appears to have been significant damage to the interior of the building.

Oliver Paipoonge firefighters responded to the incident along with Superior North EMS paramedics and the Thunder Bay Police Service.

Fire Chief Sean Horan told Dougall Media at the scene Tuesday his crews arrived around 10:45 p.m. and encountered heavy smoke.

A nearby resident reported hearing responders pounding on the door and yelling to alert anyone inside that they needed to get out.

"We ended up locating somebody and got them out of the building, and then went into firefighting activities," Horan confirmed. "We were able to knock the fire down and stop it, and then further extinguish it."

The person who was extricated from the burning structure was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Horan said the Office of the Fire Marshal will be conducting an investigation.

He added that there were working smoke alarms in the building, and said he wanted to take the opportunity to remind people to always maintain working alarms, and "to have fire safety plans, and practise them with your people, to make sure you can get out."
