The Opportunity
 
Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) is a team of dedicated professionals delivering a vast array of emergency services to the citizens, business and visitors to Barrie. Originally organized in 1844, BFES has become one of the most respected fire services in Ontario, providing high-level service in: fire inspection/code enforcement, fire protection, technical rescue, training, communications, origin and cause investigations, and emergency management planning.
 
Under general direction from the Director of Emergency Services (Fire Chief) and the Deputy of Operations, the Assistant Deputy Chief of Emergency Management and Professional Standards manages the Emergency Management program for the City of Barrie and leads, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Training Branch within the Barrie Fire and Emergency Service. The Assistant Deputy Chief collaborates with the Deputy to coordinate assigned activities with other branches, departments, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Emergency Services (Fire Chief of Barrie Fire and Emergency Service).

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Two (2) year post-secondary college diploma or university degree in fire service administration or equivalent working experience
  • A certificate or willingness to achieve a certificate as a Community Emergency Management Coordinator through the OFMEM

Experience 
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible fire service experience, including:
  • proven management experience that includes the leadership of others in a unionized environment
  • experience in the organization, preparation, implementation and delivery of fire related courses and programs 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of fire services and the requirements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act
  • Sound understanding of professional standards including special operations, technical rescues, and hazardous material incidents
  • Proven ability to provide effective command over firefighting personnel and a thorough understanding of the incident management system and chain of command principles obtained through training and experience
  • Ability to work with elected and non-elected officials and staff at all levels
  • Superior leadership, organizational, interpersonal relations, oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)    
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

Other Important Information
 
Location: Station #1, 155 Dunlop Street West, Barrie, Ontario 
Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week; however, some non-standard hours may apply.
Wage: This a permanent full-time non-union position with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:
  • Yearly Salary: $180,944.40 per year 
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $99.42 per hour
