The Township of Cramahe has announced that it has a new fire chief.
Firefighter Matt Halmasy, who is currently the deputy chief of Cramahe Fire Department, will start his role as chief on Sept. 5.
Halmasy has 24 years of experience working in fire service. Starting as a firefighter with Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department, Halmasy later rose to the rank of captain. In 2019, he was named deputy chief with Cramahe Fire Department.
He is a member of the Northumberland County Fire Chiefs Association, a past member of the Northumberland County Training Association and an instructor for Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy. Halmasy has extensive certifications in addition to his experience, reads a recent release.
“I look forward to my new position as fire chief and serving the community in Cramahe Township,” Halmasy said.
Incumbent Cramahe Fire Department Chief Mark MacDonald is facilitating this transition with the volunteer fire department, said the township.
With more than 30 years of municipal and provincial fire service experience, MacDonald will be assuming a provincial fire association position.
“The municipality greatly appreciates the contributions and experience Chief MacDonald has contributed to Cramahe Township and Northumberland County, not only in the fire service but also as acting Cramahe CAO,” the Township of Cramahe said.
“He provided exceptional leadership in recent weather and fire emergencies.”
Halmasy will start the transition into his new duties effective Aug. 21.
