Know the signs of a chimney fire and how to prevent them: Clarington Fire

Clarington Fire want you to check your chimney after a blaze that started in a chimney took nine trucks and 26 firefighters to put out.

It happened on Monday afternoon near Highway 35/115 and Concession Road 8 in north Clarington.

Only one person was home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed, but the home was seriously damaged.

Fire Chief Gord Weir says chimney fires can happen suddenly and without warning.

If your home uses a fireplace or wood-burning stove, Weir says you should have the chimney inspected for cleanliness every year.

“Over time, soot and other by-products of burning can build up in your chimney flue,” said Weir. “Regular inspection and preventative care is key to keeping your family safe.”

You should also know the signs of a chimney fire.

Hearing loud cracking or popping noises could be a sign that your chimney is on fire, along with a loud roaring sound that’s often described as similar to a train or aircraft.

Another sign is dense smoke building up in the fireplace or coming from the top of the chimney.

You should also be on the lookout for a strong, intensely hot smell or visible flames at the top of the chimney.

If your chimney catches fire, it’s important to call 911 right away and get everyone out and a safe distance from the home.
