Course Description

This course focuses on understanding how Strategic Management is an environment that everyone has to be a part of in order to succeed. How your skills as a leader are enhanced with an understanding of the various legislation and regulations that affect your industry. We will explore how “understanding your business” is critical to the overall success of creating a culture of learning and excellence as the foundation of the strategic management environment. We will discuss the concepts of strategic management, strategic planning, business planning, business cases, risk analysis, goals, objectives and culture to see how they link and interrelate. We will explore risk, loss exposure and how to mitigate potential problem areas. Change management can only happen if the human factor is addressed. We will look at the factors that are of a concern to people about the need to change and the reasons that hinder cultural change in the workplace. The course will give the student an initial understanding of the intricacies involved in developing the environment necessary to the creation of the culture required for strategic management to exist and perpetuate as part of the department’s operational performance excellence.

This course is part of the Humber College Fire Service Executive Management Certificate program, and counts as one (1) of the twelve (12) compulsory courses required towards the certificate.
