Windsor Apartment Fire: One Dead

UPDATE: ONE PERSON DEAD IN WINDSOR APARTMENT FIRE
A man has died in a fire at a Windsor apartment building.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Service was called Ouellette Avenue at Hanna Street around 8pm Thursday. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a ground floor unit on the back of the building facing Dufferin Street.

AM800 News arrived to witness firefighters pull a man from the apartment on to the lawn where they frantically tried to resuscitate the victim until Essex Windsor Emergency Services could arrive.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Lee says crews did everything they could for the man.

"They're a little heightened at the moment, but that's what they're trained to do," says Lee. "From everything I've heard they did a fantastic job getting him out and starting emergency measures, but they weren't successful."

He says no other injuries have been reported.

"Everybody will be able to return to building accept four one suite where two people and two dogs are displaced," he added.

Lee says Windsor Police Service will hold the scene until the Ontario Fire Marshal arrives to investigate Friday morning.
