Walpole Island Fire Department to conduct controlled burns of marsh, weeds & phragmites

Sydenham Current

The Walpole Island Fire Department is extending its expertise this year to help conduct controlled burns of marsh weeds, phragmites, and tall prairie grass near homes.

This service is exclusively for marsh weeds, phragmites, and tall prairie grass, and does not include abandoned structures, fire department officials say.

“Residents wishing to have these weeds cleared from their property can call or visit the fire department to add their name and address to the list,” fire department officials added.

“The fire department will assess the area of concern before scheduling a controlled burn. Controlled burns will be performed by trained firefighters, and neighbors will be notified prior to any burns.

Officials added: “Your safety is our priority. By participating in the Controlled Burn Program, you’re contributing to a safer and healthier community. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.”
