Volunteer firefighters absorb ‘really good training'

Micha Gerber emerged from the mobile confined space search and rescue training simulator in full firefighter gear. With self-contained breathing apparatus face masks covered, he and his partner followed the hose line and felt their way to safety during Search and Rescue training at FireCon on Friday.

With the Alberton Volunteer Fire Department, Gerber said he found the training critical as his department is transitioning into more offensive over defensive firefighting.

“It’s really good training,” said Gerber. “It’s crucial when you’re going to be going into blackout situations.”

Gerber was one of over 235 volunteer firefighters from across Northwestern Ontario taking part in the three-day training program held in various locations around Thunder Bay and offered by Emergency North Training.
