UXBRIDGE — Uxbridge firefighters stopped by Joseph Gould Public School to thank Grade 3 students for completing their home fire escape plans.
On Monday, June 18 firefighters treated the school’s Grade 3 students to pizza, courtesy of Boston Pizza, and a tour of their fire trucks to say thank you for their escape plans.
“Our biggest goal is to try to have every family in Uxbridge, every household, with working smoke alarms and a home escape plan to go with them, because if you have those two in place you’re really protected in case of fire,” said Colin Clark, public education officer for the Uxbridge Fire Department.
He said fire escape plans are one of the hardest fire safety measures to get people to comply with because they’re not required by law, so partnering with area schools has been a big help.
“By partnering with the schools the kids are really buying into it, and now that teachers are buying into it and making it an assignment these kids are going home, sitting down with their families and ending up with a home escape plan,” he said.
“We’ve been responding to a fair number of fires over the last year, so programs like this are especially important to us.”
