May 29, 2025 – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is issuing a city-wide fire ban on all open-air burning, effective 12:01 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025. The move follows the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (MNRF) declaration of a Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) for the Thunder Bay District, prompted by extreme wildfire conditions.
What the Fire Ban Means
All open-air and recreational burning permits are now suspended until further notice, including:

Campfires
-
Backyard fire pits

Brush or yard waste burning
Any unauthorized burning during the fire ban is a violation and may result in fines and additional penalties under municipal and provincial regulations.
What Is Still Permitted
Under the fire ban, residents can still use:

Propane, natural gas, or charcoal barbecues for cooking

CSA-approved propane or natural gas fire bowls

Approved ceremonial or sacred fires (pre-authorized by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue)
Be Prepared: Emergency Planning Encouraged
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is also encouraging residents to take this opportunity to enhance their personal emergency preparedness by:

Assembling or updating a 72-hour emergency kit

Including essentials like food, water, medication, and personal items

Fire Ban Duration and Additional Information
The fire ban will remain in effect until fire hazard conditions improve and the RFZ is lifted by the MNRF.
