Roof loads, snow forts and visibility: Winter safety tips as Simcoe County digs out

CTV News

While residents across Simcoe County continue to dig out after an unprecedented amount of snow accumulation, frontline workers are offering important reminders to help everyone stay safe this winter.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency preparedness is a top priority. Blocked or hidden fire hydrants can delay emergency response times. Residents are encouraged to keep hydrants clear of snow and ensure that municipal green address numbers remain visible for first responders.

Clearing Rooftops

With additional snowfall in the forecast, officials in Ramara Fire and Rescue is reminding homeowners to monitor snow accumulation on rooftops. If snow build-up reaches 60 to 90 centimetres (two to three feet), action should be taken to remove it. Heavy snow loads can cause structural failures, and many roofs may already be carrying more weight than they were designed for, the fire service stated.

According to the Midland Fire Department, a cubic foot of snow can weigh anywhere from seven to 30 pounds, depending on its density. Officials say using a roof rake can help safely remove snow from lower levels, but for complex or tall structures, professional assistance may be necessary. Outbuildings and sheds are particularly vulnerable to snow loading and may require more frequent clearing.

Snowbank Concerns

Snowbanks along roads and intersections have grown significantly, making visibility a concern. Barrie police ask drivers to use extra caution when turning onto roadways and to take a second look before moving. They suggest backing into driveways to improve visibility when exiting onto the road.

Proper Insulation

“Want to keep Jack Frost outside?” Springwater Township advises homeowners to check their insulation to prevent snow and ice build-up while reducing heat loss. Adding extra insulation to attics, basements, and garages acts as a “winter blanket” for homes, helping to maintain warmth and conserve energy.

“Stay cozy while keeping energy inside,” the township added.

Snow Fort Safety

Increased snowfall also means more snow forts, and Ramara Fire and Rescue is stressing safety for children playing in the snow. Snow forts should never be built near roadways, as plows may come through unexpectedly. Instead, children should construct roofless structures like castles to avoid the risk of collapse. Adults are advised to supervise play, ensure kids use firm snow, watch for frostbite, and always have a buddy system in place.

As winter continues, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to stay safe in snowy conditions.
