SILVER WATER – The Robinson Township Fire Department introduced their purchase of a used (but in great condition) fire truck from the Brock Township Fire Department last week.
“The Robinson Township Fire Department has received a 1999 GMC fire truck water tender granted through the Jenny Jones Foundation. Applications are handled through the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs,” said Fire Chief Doug Wismer, who along with Tim McKinlay, apparatus maintenance officer, provided information on the truck.
It was explained in their release, “the Jenny Jones Foundation makes funds available to volunteer fire departments for all sorts of firefighting equipment. In less than a year, Jenny’s Heroes Canada Equipment Grant has generously donated over $100,000 to volunteer fire departments across Ontario to help purchase new, or new to the department, fire safety equipment.” It was pointed out, applications are not difficult and the OAFC is very helpful in grant preparations.
The Robinson Township Fire Department purchased the fire truck for $5,000.
“The truck is in excellent condition, as the previous fire department (Brock Township, which is just east of Lake Simcoe) looked after their apparatus very well,” said Mr. Wismer. “It is our first truck with a diesel engine which we expect will help us lower our fuel costs and with powerful air brakes it is much more reliable and safe.”
The fire truck holds 1,500 imperial gallons of water and has a Cat diesel engine. The apparatus is well equipped with LED lighting and a quick dump system. With only 23,650 kilometres on the truck, it looks in almost new condition and is expected to serve the Robinson Fire Department for a number of years. This truck will replace their 1972 GMC tanker.
Mr. Wismer added, “we encourage other volunteer departments who need equipment updates to look into applying for a grant through the Jenny Jones Fire Services Equipment Grant.”
