Pembroke Fire Department nips two potential disasters in the bud

Cornwall Standard-Freeholder

The Pembroke Fire Department tackled a garage fire on Mackay St. Saturday night, responding to the alarm at 11:30 p.m. With one pumper truck and the duty crew in action, the fire was promptly brought under control.

Pembroke Fire Chief Scott Selle said firefighters effectively contained the damage to the area of origin resulting in only minor harm to the garage structure. No injuries were reported, and none of the occupants of the nearby home were displaced.

Following the fire the Pembroke Fire Department issued a reminder to the public reminding them about safe smoking practices. Selle emphasized the importance of properly extinguishing smoking materials in approved containers and discouraged the direct disposal of such materials into garbage cans.

According to Selle, due to the observant neighbour who saw the fire and the quick response and extinguishment by the Pembroke Fire Department, a larger loss of property and potential loss of life was avoided.

On the subsequent night, the Pembroke Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm, discovering unattended lit candles at the property. The incident serves as a reminder to always extinguish candles when leaving a room.

Both incidents underscore the significance of exercising common sense and adhering to fire safety protocols at home and in the workplace. The Pembroke Fire Department urges residents and businesses alike to prioritize safety, preventing potentially disastrous outcomes.
