‘Mountains’ of cans lead to mountains of cash for fire-rescue group

It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. And it’s for a worthy cause. The Neebing Fire/Rescue Association will hold its first can-sorting event of the season on Friday, a “yucky” ritual that has raised a bundle for the local fire department. “Since 2010, we have cashed in $30,000 worth of aluminum and steel,” association member Clara Butikofer said on Wednesday. “The most lucrative is the beer cans.” “Mountains” of cans are dropped off over the winter at containers set up for the association’s initiative at Neebing’s two landfill sites. After they’ve been collected, the cans are hauled to an area property owner who provides a space for sorting and cleaning. “It’s a yucky job, but we have a great team so we make it fun,” one volunteer put it in a social-media post. The latest can mountain is expected to generate $5,000. Gloves and water are provided to volunteer sorters. Friday’s event is to take place at 260 Farm Rd., between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
