A gas main break has led to an emergency road closure on McCann Street from Sidney Street to Byron Street in Quinte West.

Speaking with Quinte News, Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan says emergency crews received calls at around 12:45 p.m. that a contractor working with the city had accidentally hit one of the main Enbridge gas lines.

“We responded with OPP, and we evacuated homes on McCann (Street) and Dixon (Drive),” Whelan tells Quinte News.

“I just talked to the rep on scene here, and it’s a major line, so the whole area is going to be affected for about two or three hours at minimum.”

The southbound lane of Sidney Street between Dixon Drive and McCann Street is also closed to through traffic.

Whelan says there are no injuries being reported but that residents are asked to avoid the area.

Both closures are in effect until further notice.
