As flames demand preparedness and emergencies wait for no one, the Gananoque Fire Department has been steadily reinforcing its ranks and enhancing its capabilities, according to a new report presented to town council on Tuesday.
The third and fourth quarter fire department report, compiled by Fire Chief Andrew Dickson, highlights a year of transition, growth, and public engagement.
With the departure of former fire chief Gord Howard, Dickson was promoted to fire chief, while Andrew Kent stepped into the role of deputy fire chief.
One of the department’s key accomplishments in the latter half of 2024 was its recruitment drive, which resulted in the addition of nine new paid on-call firefighters. Each recruit underwent extensive training to ensure they were prepared for active duty.
The fire department also made strides in infrastructure, with the ongoing development of a new fire training facility.
Over the past months, the concrete pad was poured and six sea containers were purchased to fabricate the structure, with work set to continue into 2025.
Public safety and engagement remained a priority, with the department participating in community events such as Pump-Gan-Fest, Ribfest, and Santa in the Park.
Firefighters offered truck tours, foam parties, and obstacle courses for children, while also emphasizing fire safety education. Fire Prevention Week saw crews conducting door-to-door smoke alarm checks and fire drills at all three local schools.
Operational readiness was also bolstered, with annual pump testing ensuring the department’s fleet met industry standards.
Additionally, several firefighters earned new certifications in fire inspection, auto-extrication, and high-rise firefighting operations.
The department closed out the year by celebrating the retirement of veteran firefighter Todd Sherboneau, who served Gananoque residents for more than 19 years.
Council formally received the report at its Tuesday meeting.
