The owner of a multi-unit residential building has been fined $47,000 for multiple offences under the Ontario Fire Code.

Fire services say the fines were issued Wednesday, including failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition, failing to have portable extinguishers maintained and tested, failing to test smoke alarms annually and failing to post fire emergency procedures.

“We take Ontario Fire Code violations very seriously as they can pose significant risks to the safety of tenants,” Deputy Chief Naomi Thibault said in a press release. “Such penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence when it comes to complying with the Ontario Fire Code.”

Fire services reminds all property and business owners that having fire protection equipment inspected and tested is their responsibility, and failing to do so can result in substantial fines.
