CTV News

Thick, black smoke and flames could be seen shooting into the sky above the Innisfil Recreational Complex Monday afternoon.

South Simcoe police and emergency services responded to the call about a fire on the roof of the Innisfil Recreational Complex on Yonge Street. The building was evacuated as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

“We’re grateful for the quick actions of staff who evacuated the building and for our crews who responded so rapidly to contain the fire,” stated Deputy Fire Chief Carla MacDonald.

Police say the Rizzardo Health and Wellness Centre, along with the other units in the area were unaffected by the situation. They add there are no safety concerns at this time.

Officials say the Innisfil Recreational Complex, which houses the YMCA, will be closed until a safety assessment can be completed.

“All registered and drop-in programs scheduled for May 12 have been cancelled,” the town noted.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.
