Dundas Street West reopens after 2-alarm fire in Little Portugal

Dundas Street West has reopened after a two-alarm fire shut down a section of the street in the heart of Little Portugal on Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were called around 4:30 p.m. by a passerby who noticed "a problem inside" a commercial building on Dundas Street West at Rusholme Road, said Platoon Chief Dave Denysek.

Toronto Fire sent more than a dozen vehicles to the scene of the two-alarm fire. Crews smashed in a front window and "made a quick knock down" of the fire, said Denysek.

Some of the apartments above the space are occupied by seniors, according to local resident Anna Fournier. She said they were evacuated quickly with some needing oxygen from fire crews.

Paramedics say one person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Toronto police initially tweeted there were reports of screaming coming from the building.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
