Damage is estimated to exceed $200,000 after London firefighters responded to an early morning blaze at an apartment highrise in the city’s southwest end.

Fire crews responded to a highrise monitor alarm around 2:20 a.m. on Monday, with firefighters encountering heavy smoke on the second floor of an apartment building, according to a post on social media by the London Fire Department. A later post identified the building’s address as 301 Base Line Rd. W, near the intersection of Commissioners Road and Andover Drive.

Fire crews quickly put out the fire and air monitoring was done. Damage was pegged at more than $200,000, officials said.

The fire was caused by “improperly discarded smoking material,” officials said.

Due to temperatures around –14 C amid a looming deep freeze, a London Transit bus was brought to the building, but wasn’t needed, officials noted. “Crews did a fantastic job to contain the fire to the apartment and get all residents back into the apartment quickly.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze, fire officials said.
