With the 2025 volunteer firefighter intake of April 15 looming, the City of Greater Sudbury is urging those interested in joining to apply now.
Applications are accepted year-round, but those received after April 15 will be punted for consideration in 2026.
Leading up to the April 15 deadline, the city has lined up four open houses to help applicants gain greater insight on volunteer firefighting.
These sessions will allow individuals to ask questions, interact with current firefighters and learn firsthand about the responsibilities and experiences associated with firefighting, the city noted in a media release.
- March 26: 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Garson Station, 206 Church St.
- March 27 - 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Val Therese Station, 4200 Old Highway 69
- April 2 - 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the 144 Waters Station, 25 Black Lake Rd.
- April 3 - 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Azilda Station, 239 Montee Principale
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have completed Grade 12 and possess a valid G driver’s licence with a good driving record.
A vulnerable sector criminal record check, medical and valid Standard First Aid/Level C CPR certificate will be required should a position be offered.
Of the 131 volunteer firefighters to apply in 2024, 34 remained by early January, with applicants dropping off each step of the way.
Of the initial total, 48 people were immediately disqualified due to their not residing in a volunteer district, which brought the total down to 83.
Of this new total, 21 people either withdrew or did not respond to the city’s phone calls for physical testing, leaving 56 applicants scheduled to proceed.
During testing, two participants failed their blood pressure tests and were asked to follow up with a physician. Both returned on the makeup date and passed.
One candidate who failed their blood pressure testing was referred to a physician and was not able to complete physical testing.
Coming out of physical testing, 47 candidates advanced to the interview stage of the recruitment process.
Following an interview process spanning over a three-week period, 39 applicants were offered positions and split into two groups to attend certification training.
