Chatham-Kent Fire responds to homeless encampment fire

CTV News

Chatham-Kent Fire crews are on scene of a tent fire at a homeless encampment in Chatham.

Dubbed ‘Tent City’ online, crews were called to the scene on Thames Street just after 3 p.m. Firefighters were able to move propane tanks from the area and put out the flames.

The fire department said it went to the area alongside the Chatham-Kent Police Service and Chatham-Kent Housing Services recently to ensure there is enough space between the tents.

No injuries were sustained, and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Fire officials are reminded residents to use propane heaters safely, don’t use outdoor heaters inside, make sure there’s proper ventilation, keep any heaters away from flammable materials, and follow manufacturer instructions.
