$5 million Kitchener townhouse complex fire not considered suspicious

Waterloo Region Record

The Ontario Fire Marshal is looking into the cause of a “substantial” fire at a townhouse complex in Kitchener, with early damage estimates in excess of $5 million.

The Kingsway Drive fire occurred Sunday, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police said, with residents evacuating the building and scrambling to Grand River Transit buses for shelter. People living in the affected units were displaced, said Fire Chief Robert Gilmore in an email.

There were no physical injuries reported, police said, and the fire is not considered suspicious.

Kingsway Drive was closed for an extended period and fire department investigators are on the scene Monday.

“Crews remained overnight due to collapse and smoldering materials,” Gilmore said.

The Red Cross was brought in to assist residents.
