Two Ottawa firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a fire in a home in Stittsville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ottawa Fire Service says it responded to the 5000 block of Fernbank Road near Shea Road at about 1:28 p.m. after a 911 caller reported grey smoke coming from the roof of a single-family home. No one was home at the time of the fire.

On arrivals, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the second floor and attic of the home.

While battling the fire, two firefighters fell through the first floor, according to Ottawa fire spokesperson Nick Defazio.

“One went right down into the basement along with the wood stove and sustained a minor foot injury and the second went halfway through the floor and sustained a rib injury,” Defazio told CTV News.

A paramedics spokesperson says two adults were transported to hospital in stable condition. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Firefighters at the scene had to deal with several hazards at the scene, including propane tanks, according to a news release from Ottawa fire.

Crews called for additional resources to the scene and initiated a “fast attack” on the fire.

A hose line was also advanced inside the structure. The fire was in an area with no hydrants, forcing crews to use a water shuttle system to bring water to the scene.

The blaze was declared under control at 5:31 p.m.

An Ottawa Fire Service official told CTV News Ottawa late Wednesday night that the two firefighters were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released.

Two residents of the home and two dogs have been displaced.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
