13 cats, 2 dogs dead after fire in Barrhaven: Fire Chief

Ottawa Fire Services confirms several animals have died after a fire in Barrhaven Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to a duplex on Tedwyn Drive at around 9:11 a.m. on reports that smoke could be seen coming from an upstairs bedroom window.

The fire was under control in about an hour and was contained to the area of origin before it could spread, according to a news release. Firefighters searched the home twice and did not find any human occupants. Ottawa paramedics told CTV News Ottawa they did not transport anyone from the scene.

In a statement to CTV News Ottawa Monday afternoon, however, Fire Chief Paul Hutt said more than a dozen cats and two dogs died in the blaze.

“Bylaw Officers and Ottawa Fire Services are currently on scene conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that sadly 13 cats and two dogs perished in the fire,” Hutt wrote. “Several cats and dogs have also been transported for emergency care. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this fire, especially the animals.”

No other details about the fire were immediately available. Ottawa Fire Services said an investigator was dispatched to determine what caused it.
