Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services (WSFES) has a great opportunity within the Administration Division. Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief – Support is responsible for the day-to-day management of Public Education, Fire Prevention, and Emergency management in alignment with departmental and corporate strategic direction and will directly oversee the Fire Prevention/Public Education Division and Emergency Management. Key duties include overseeing / supporting fire prevention / public education, performance planning/evaluation, procurement coordination, research and policy development, fire cause investigation, plans review, trends/incident analyses, budget/business planning, project management, report preparation, emergency plan maintenance/update, associated liaison and representative duties including assuming the role and statutory responsibilities of Fire Chief and CEMC in the absence of same, attending Council/Committee meetings where required, championing the vision, mission and strategic direction of the WSFES and corporation, and modelling professional, corporate and Character Community values.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Post-Secondary diploma/degree from an accredited College or University in Business/Administration or related field or University degree (BA, BSc) in Fire Sciences, Public Administration or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience working in a unionized or composite fire department
- 4-years’ experience as a senior officer
- Working knowledge of the FPPA, OH&SA, Fire Code, Building Code, Emergency Management & Civil Protection Act, Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act
- Proficient in Microsoft Office- Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Excellent customer service, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all municipal staff, elected officials, residents and other agencies
- Effective organization skills; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines regularly
- High degree of accuracy, attention to detail and record keeping skills
- Problem-solving skills, discretion and good judgement when handling confidential/sensitive information and communicating with individuals regarding controversial matters; sensitivity and ability to maintain security of files
- Availability to attend evening and weekend meetings in order to accommodate peak periods and workloads.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing

- NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector 2
- NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 1
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 2
- NFPA 1035 Public Educator 1
- Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) or within 24 months
- NFPA Fire Officer 3 (preferred)
- NFPA 1035 Public Educator 2 (preferred)
