Strong winds fuel car fire destroying two vehicles in Pembroke

The Gananoque Reporter

Early Sunday morning, a vehicle fire on Pembroke Street West, aided by high winds destroyed two cars and damaged a third. The Pembroke Fire Department (PFD) responded to the incident at approximately 1:25 a.m. with a pumper truck and three firefighters.

According to Pembroke Fire Chief Scott Selle, upon arrival, firefighters found two vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with a third suffering heat damage. Strong winds increased the fire’s intensity and spread.

Despite the challenging conditions, crews brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further. Selle said the scene presented multiple hazards, including exploding tires and airbags, which sent projectiles flying and altered fire conditions. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the vehicles were unoccupied.

The PFD reminds residents to keep a safe distance from vehicle fires. Such incidents pose serious risks from projectiles and toxic smoke. Residents should immediately call 911 from a safe location.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The Pembroke Fire Department extends gratitude to the Ontario Provincial Police and the City of Pembroke Operations Department for their assistance during the incident.
