PICKERING — Pickering Fire Services, Enbridge Gas Distribution and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council recently announced they are partnering to improve home safety, in hopes of bringing fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero.
Pickering Fire Services received 264 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Project Zero, a public education campaign delivered in partnership by Enbridge and the FMPFSC. This year, Enbridge invested $200,000 in Project Zero, providing more than 6,600 alarms to residents in 30 Ontario municipalities. To date, Project Zero has given out over 34,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments for distribution in their cities.
Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a byproduct of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels. It is important that all fuel-burning equipment be properly maintained to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended as a second line of defence to protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning that is needed to safely escape from a house fire, or carbon monoxide exposure.
