The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating a house fire on Fleming Way in Shelburne.
The Shelburne and District Fire Department responded to the call at approximately 12:49 p.m. on Monday, and called in a five-person crew from the Orangeville Fire Department to assist.
"We got the fire knocked out fairly quickly," said Shelburne and District Fire Chief Brad Lemaich.
Four occupants from the upstairs apartment got out of the house and were sent to hospital with minor injuries; two occupants from the lower level also escaped the house.
“Any fire that causes this much damage is treated seriously, and needs to be investigated fully. Shelburne police will not speculate at this early stage in the investigation whether foul play is suspected or not," said Sgt. Paul Neumann. “Most importantly, we are thankful that injuries were not more serious.”
Lemaich said that crews attacked the fire fairly aggressively in order to keep the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes. One firefighter was also sent to hospital for an ankle injury.
"He'll be on crutches for a day or two," said Lemaich. "We're glad it's not anything more serious."
The Ontario Fire Marshall continues to investigate; there is not a cost estimate of damages yet.
