Video shows flames shooting out of a unit in a highrise residential building in Ontario on Wednesday.

It happened in Ottawa on Woodridge Crescent, near Bayshore Shopping Centre.

Ottawa firefighters said in a post that they received multiple 911 calls at around 6:41 p.m. reporting smoke and flames from a 10-floor apartment.

Firefighters got to the scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed that smoke and flames were “shooting out of a 10th-floor balcony door,” the post said.

“Firefighters quickly made their way to the 10th floor where they were met with heavy black smoke throughout the hallway and zero visibility conditions,” officials said.

“Firefighters located the fire unit and advanced a hose line inside. Secondary crews began searching the hallway and the fire unit for any residents. Firefighters helped multiple occupants safely exit the structure.”

The blaze was declared under control around 20 minutes after the first call came in and it was contained to the unit where it started.

Firefighters said two searches were completed of the unit and the 10th-floor hallway and no occupants were found.

The building was ventilated before residents were allowed to go back inside.

An Ottawa transit bus was brought to the scene to shelter residents before they were let back in.
